The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, on Tuesday sworn in 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen, urging them to shun self-interest and embrace transparent, accountable, and people-centered leadership.

The ceremony, held at Government House, Port Harcourt, marks a significant step in restoring democratic governance to the state after months of political turbulence that triggered federal intervention.

Addressing the new council bosses, Administrator Ibas reminded them that public office is a trust to serve the people, not a platform for personal enrichment.

“This victory is not a prize to be enjoyed; it is a burden to be carried. It is not an entitlement, but a duty. It is not a call to self-interest, but to selfless service,” he declared, stressing the need to prioritize grassroots development over patronage politics.

He commended the peaceful conduct of the August 30 local government elections, describing it as a decisive step in reinstating constitutional order and proof of Rivers people’s resilience. Ibas also praised the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) for delivering a transparent and credible poll.

The Administrator charged the new chairmen to focus on peace and security, working with traditional rulers, security agencies, and community leaders, while also strengthening local economies through small business support, infrastructure, and investments in education.

He further highlighted the ongoing biometric enrollment of local government staff, describing it as a critical reform for effective planning and payroll
