Judgment Expected in Bail Bid of Alleged ‘Insurance Killers’

Polokwane, Limpopo – The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court is today expected to rule on the bail application of former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela, who stands accused alongside her sister and daughter in a string of insurance-related murders.

Kutumela, her sister Anna Shokane and daughter Florah Shokane have been behind bars since December last year while applying for bail. The trio is accused of orchestrating the murders of nine people in a scheme allegedly aimed at securing insurance payouts totalling R10 million.

Kutumela faces 32 charges, including nine counts of murder, as well as fraud and money laundering. Her sister Anna is charged with three counts of murder, while Florah faces charges of murder, fraud, and money laundering.

According to court evidence, the accused allegedly channelled insurance payouts through each other’s accounts to conceal their dealings. The State has argued that releasing them on bail could allow them to interfere with witnesses or continue fraudulent activities.

The highly anticipated ruling will determine whether the three remain in custody while awaiting trial for what has been described as one of Limpopo’s most chilling cases of alleged insurance-driven killings.
