The Kogi State Government has prohibited graduation and signing-out ceremonies in basic, secondary, and tertiary institutions across the state.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Wemi Jones, announced the ban on Wednesday in Lokoja, citing the financial strain on parents and the social vices often linked to such events.

He explained that the practice of holding elaborate graduation parties had become “incessant and costly,” especially in nursery, primary, and secondary schools, placing unnecessary pressure on families.

Jones said the government would introduce alternative forms of academic recognition to encourage healthy competition and commitment to learning, while eliminating excesses associated with current practices.

In addition, parents were directed to provide separate notebooks for their children’s classwork and assignments instead of using textbooks as workbooks, a move aimed at making books reusable for siblings and reducing household expenses.

The commissioner also appealed to private schools to keep tuition fees moderate while maintaining high educational standards, urging stakeholders to support the reforms for the overall improvement of education in the state.
