ADC Slams Tinubu Over ‘False’ Revenue Claims, Petrol Tax, Passport Fee Hike

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of misleading Nigerians with what it described as false claims of revenue success, while implementing policies that worsen hardship.

In a statement issued Thursday by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said government figures do not add up, pointing to a N21.22 trillion shortfall between the 2025 budget projection of N41.81 trillion and the N20.59 trillion revenue reportedly mobilised so far.

The ADC dismissed Tinubu’s claim of record revenue growth as “propaganda,” stressing that the Federal Government’s actual share of statutory allocations and VAT makes the numbers unrealistic.

The party also faulted Tinubu’s statement on the naira’s exchange rate at inauguration, describing it as “patently false,” and argued that under his watch, the currency has lost over 50 percent of its value, driving up food prices, transport costs and rent.

On borrowing, the ADC accused the government of contradiction, citing recent bond auctions and the approval of a $21 billion loan by the National Assembly, despite claims of sufficient revenue.

The opposition further condemned the introduction of a 5 percent petrol tax and the 300 percent hike in international passport fees, calling both policies “cruel” and “insensitive.”

“In Nigeria, a passport now costs 143 percent of the minimum wage, compared to just 5 percent in the UK. This government is punishing survival and monetising hardship,” the ADC said.

It added that Nigeria remains the world’s poverty capital, a fact it said should “humble any serious government” rather than inspire celebration of supposed economic gains.
