The Abia State Government says it has completed 140 primary health care centres across the state under the Project Ekwueme Programme, with many of them awaiting functionalisation and opening for public use.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu revealed that reconstruction works are ongoing in several general hospitals and assured that all health projects would be fully delivered before the end of November 2025. He added that two cottage hospitals located in Abayi and Umuihe communities are ready for commissioning.

The commissioner also announced plans to establish two new isolation centres for disease control in the state. According to him, scoping of the sites is ongoing, with one to be located at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Aba, and the other at Ozuakoli Leprosy Centre. He noted that the Amachara Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre remains the state’s flagship isolation facility, stressing that there are currently no confirmed cases of diseases of public health concern in Abia.

On education, Kanu said the Ministry of Basic Education has made significant progress in renovating schools, training newly recruited teachers, assessing dilapidated facilities, supervising secondary education, aligning policies with stakeholders, and conducting standardized examinations.

“These interventions demonstrate the government’s commitment to sustaining a conducive learning environment that will position Abia as a leading centre of educational excellence in Nigeria,” he stated.

The briefing was also attended by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche; the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
