Residents of Oworonshoki, Lagos State, on Monday blocked the Third Mainland Bridge in protest against the demolition of properties in their community.
The protest, which extended to the outbound section of the bridge, caused a massive traffic gridlock, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
The demonstration followed an enforcement exercise by the Lagos State Government, which reportedly began in the early hours of Saturday. A joint task force was said to have demolished several unapproved structures along the Lekki and Iyana Oworonshoki coastal lines, displacing scores of residents and property owners.
Armed with placards bearing inscriptions such as “Give us back our lands and houses” and “Stop demolishing our life savings”, the protesters vowed to remain on the bridge until the demolition exercise was suspended and all equipment withdrawn from their community.
