Hon. Obi Aguocha Slams Court Ruling on Nnamdi Kanu, Faults Igbo Leaders’ Silence

Member representing Umuahia North, Umuahia South, and Ikwuano Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has faulted the ruling of the court in the ongoing trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing it as disappointing and unjust.

Speaking to journalists after Kanu’s court appearance on Thursday, Aguocha decried the decision of the court to sideline the issue of extraordinary rendition, which he described as a fundamental part of the matter. He revealed that Kanu’s legal team is set to return with evidence to prove the rendition, stressing that such proof would alter the trajectory of the case.

The lawmaker lamented what he called “two sets of rules” in Nigeria—one for the Igbo man and another for other Nigerians. He argued that while others facing similar trials have been granted reprieve, Kanu has consistently been denied such privileges.

On the IPOB leader’s health, Aguocha condemned the federal government’s refusal to grant him medical leave despite clear medical reports indicating organ insufficiency. “Even the President travels abroad to seek medical treatment, yet Nnamdi Kanu is denied the same right. Is the government waiting for him to die before acting?” he queried.

Aguocha also directed his criticism at Igbo political, spiritual, and social leaders, accusing them of maintaining “extraordinary silence” over Kanu’s plight. He contrasted this with the federal government’s willingness to negotiate with insurgents and non-state actors from other parts of the country.

“This clearly shows the injustice in the administration of criminal justice in Nigeria. The Igbos must rise and say enough is enough,” Aguocha declared.

The federal lawmaker further emphasized that his position is not merely about politics but about equity, fairness, and the preservation of justice for every Nigerian citizen. He called on both the federal government and the Southeast leadership to take urgent steps that will promote peace, unity, and national cohesion through a just resolution of the matter.
