Two young men have been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody for allegedly killing a University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student during a bonfire night organised by the Faculty of Arts.

The Enugu State Police Command identified the suspects as Ezema Onyedikachi (27) and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony (21), who are facing charges of conspiracy and murder in connection with the death of 29-year-old Nweze Chiebonam.

Police reports indicate that the incident occurred in the early hours of September 13, 2025, following a minor vehicular accident involving the suspects and the deceased after the faculty event held on September 12 at the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

Although the initial misunderstanding was resolved, investigations revealed that the suspects later returned with a dagger and attacked Chiebonam. Onyedikachi allegedly stabbed the victim in the chest, leading to his death despite hospital efforts. The weapon was recovered by authorities.

Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the act as “unfortunate and avoidable,” urging youths to embrace peaceful conflict resolution instead of violence.

The killing has sparked outrage within the university community and beyond, with renewed calls for stronger measures to safeguard students and promote non-violent conflict management.

The suspects remain in custody as court proceedings continue.
