Abuja, October 7, 2025 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has welcomed a new leadership era with the appointment of May Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting Chairman. The transition followed the departure of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who proceeded on terminal leave.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned legal expert and National Commissioner, steps into her new role at a critical time as the commission prepares for forthcoming elections and continues efforts to deepen electoral reforms.

A Profile in Leadership and Legal Expertise

Born in Kano and originally from Delta State, Agbamuche-Mbu’s upbringing across Nigeria’s diverse regions has shaped her inclusive and national outlook. She attended St. Louis Secondary School in Kano before earning her law degree from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1984. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 1985, she further qualified in the United Kingdom, gaining admission as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales and earning a Master’s degree in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.

With over 30 years of legal practice, Agbamuche-Mbu was the managing partner of Norfolk Partners, a Lagos-based law firm, before joining INEC in 2016. Her vast experience includes serving as the sole solicitor on the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee (2010-2011) and contributing to policy development for Nigeria’s solid minerals sector in 2016.

Within INEC, she has played a key role in legal and policy reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s electoral processes. Agbamuche-Mbu is also a certified arbitrator and a former secretary of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria). She previously edited the legal column “Legal Eagle” for THISDAY Lawyer, contributing over 120 editions.

Known for maintaining a low public profile, Agbamuche-Mbu is widely respected for her professionalism, integrity, and dedication to public service.

Leadership at a Pivotal Moment

Her appointment as Acting Chairman comes as INEC intensifies preparations for upcoming elections and strives to enhance the credibility and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral system. Observers anticipate her leadership will be instrumental in navigating the commission through this important period.
