The University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State, has reclaimed its position as Nigeria’s best university in the 2026 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
According to the ranking published on THE’s official website on Thursday, UI was placed within the 801–1,000 band globally—its best performance since 2023—outshining other leading Nigerian universities.
This year’s assessment covered 2,191 institutions across 115 countries, using 18 performance indicators grouped under five core pillars: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.
UI rose from fourth place in the 2025 ranking to first in 2026, displacing Covenant University, which topped the national list in 2024 and 2025. Following UI in the 2026 Nigerian ranking are the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Bayero University Kano (BUK), and Covenant University, ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively.
Globally, THE analysed over 174.9 million citations from 18.7 million research publications and gathered survey responses from more than 108,000 scholars to produce the 2026 results.
UNILAG emerged as Nigeria’s leader in research quality with a score of 66.7, BUK ranked highest in international outlook, while Covenant University recorded the strongest industry connections.
Out of the 51 Nigerian institutions featured in the 2026 ranking, only UI and UNILAG appeared within the 801–1,000 range. BUK, Covenant, and Landmark universities ranked between 1,001–1,200, while Ahmadu Bello University, Federal University of Technology Minna, University of Ilorin, University of Jos, and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, were placed between 1,201–1,500 globally.
Fourteen Nigerian universities were classified in the 1501+ category, while 27 others were unranked.
THE, a globally recognised authority in higher education analysis, only ranks institutions that teach undergraduates, conduct research across multiple disciplines, and have produced at least 1,000 research papers between 2020 and 2024, with no fewer than 100 annually.
