The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the Federal Government’s Renegotiation Team, led by former Head of Service, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, as its two-week warning strike enters the seventh day.

In a bulletin to members dated October 19, 2025, and obtained by The Guardian, ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, disclosed that “significant progress” has been made on five of the union’s seven key demands. These include the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, and the mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

Other issues showing progress are the confiscation of University of Abuja land and the alleged victimisation of members at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Lagos State University (LASU), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Piwuna also revealed that some prominent Nigerians have intervened to help resolve the standoff.
“Engagements are continuing on all elements of the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, guided by the principles of collective bargaining,” he stated.

He commended members for their resilience and unity during the industrial action, urging them to rely only on updates from their branch chairpersons and attend congress meetings regularly.

The ongoing warning strike, declared last week, aims to push the Federal Government to honour existing agreements and address critical issues affecting university funding, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy.
