The Ondo State government has appealed for calm following the circulation of a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo warning of potential attacks by members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in parts of the state.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, described the leaked document as part of routine intelligence sharing among security agencies. He assured that the state government and security operatives were already acting on the information to safeguard lives and property.

According to the memo, which was addressed to the Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, ISWAP operatives had reportedly begun surveillance of “soft targets” in Oyin-Akoko, Eriti-Akoko, and Owo. The DSS urged immediate reinforcement of security in those areas.

Ajanaku emphasized that such intelligence reports are standard in security operations and are designed to enhance vigilance and proactive response. “The government is working closely with all security agencies to ensure Ondo remains one of the safest states in the country,” he said.

He advised residents to stay calm, go about their normal activities, and promptly report any suspicious movements to the nearest security post.

Confirming the development, the state police spokesperson, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal had convened security meetings with community leaders and deployed additional personnel across sensitive locations, particularly in the Akoko axis.

The latest alert comes three years after terrorists linked to ISWAP attacked St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, killing 41 worshippers and injuring many others. The suspects are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
