Umuahia, Abia State, The Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, has announced that the state’s free education programme for primary and junior secondary schools is yielding impressive results, with school enrolment figures more than doubling in recent months.
Speaking during this week’s press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, Prince Kanu revealed that data from the Abia State Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), compiled from schools and local government education authorities across the state, show that enrolment rose from 151,139 to 327,000 between July and October 2025.
He described the surge as clear evidence of growing confidence in the administration’s education policies and commitment to human capital development.
Prince Kanu also announced that Governor Alex Otti will, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, commission the newly completed Umuele Court Building Complex located in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
In addition, he disclosed that the government has so far recruited 5,394 teachers, with plans underway to employ another 4,000 teachers in the second phase of recruitment.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the state’s dedication to improving the welfare and working conditions of teachers, noting several ongoing reforms, including:
- Regular payment of teachers’ salaries
- Financial compensation for teachers in hard-to-reach areas
- Increase in retirement age from 60 to 65 years
- Continuous training and retraining of teachers
- Ongoing improvements to the learning environment
Prince Kanu emphasized that these initiatives underscore the Otti administration’s vision to make Abia a model state in education and youth empowerment.
