The Anambra State Government has suspended the head teacher of Community Primary School, Umunze, in Orumba South Local Government Area, for allowing a political rally to take place within the school premises.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the indefinite suspension in a statement issued on Wednesday in Awka.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the suspension follows a circular issued by the Ministry of Education on August 14, which strictly banned the use of school grounds for political, social, or religious events.
Prof. Chuma-Udeh said the head teacher’s action was a clear violation of the directive and condemned the disruption of academic activities as well as the safety risks posed to pupils during the rally.
She added that the state government is considering legal action against the organisers of the event for disrupting learning and endangering the children’s welfare.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Chairman of Orumba South Local Government Area, Mr. Shedrack Azubuike, intervened to halt the unauthorised rally, citing the state’s standing order that prohibits such gatherings in both public and private schools during school hours.
The incident occurred ahead of the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8.
