Governor Otti Partners Barn Holding Group on Multi-Billion Naira Livestock Project in Abia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has announced plans to partner with Barn Holding Group, a leading agribusiness conglomerate, to establish a large-scale livestock and dairy development project in the state.

The multi-billion naira initiative, which will run under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, aims to create over 20,000 jobs, boost food security, and significantly increase Abia’s internally generated revenue.

Speaking during a presentation by the Chief Executive Officer of Barn Holding Group, Engr. Tony Jibuno, on Tuesday, November 4, Governor Otti described the proposal as a major step toward agricultural transformation and job creation in the state.

He commended the company’s “innovative and practical approach” to modern farming, stressing that agriculture remains the foundation of Nigeria’s sustainable development.

To fast-track the process, Governor Otti set up a five-member committee to work with the company in developing the project’s framework and financing structure. He emphasized the need for thorough planning and proper execution, saying, “The devil is always in the details. We must dot all the i’s and cross the t’s before moving to the site as quickly as possible.”

The governor assured that the state government would provide land for the project, either in Okoko Item, where the company initially proposed to begin or in Umunneochi, where sufficient land is also available. He noted that the project aligns with his administration’s push for ranching and modern livestock management, adding that open grazing is no longer sustainable.

Earlier, Engr. Jibuno revealed that the project would focus on revitalising the Okoko Livestock Farm, developing a feedlot and abattoir in Umunneochi, and building a cattle ranch that will also serve as a disease-control and livestock-traceability centre.

He said the initiative would act as a demonstration and training hub for local farmers, produce about 2,000 tonnes of beef annually, and serve as a regional model for modern livestock production. Jibuno also appealed for an additional 500 hectares of land near Okoko to ensure long-term viability.

He assured that the partnership would reduce import dependence, strengthen local production, and create massive employment opportunities for Abians.

Chaka Chukwumerije; DG, PPP and Investment Promotion Office, Mr. Chinedum Chijioke; SA on Lands, Pastor Okorougo Aji; and the Principal Secretary and Chief Strategy Officer, Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, among others.
