Otti Calls on Abia Accountants to Uphold Integrity, Innovation, and Excellence

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has urged accountants in the state to maintain the highest standards of accountability, integrity, and professionalism in their work. He made the appeal on Tuesday during the 2025 International Accounting Day celebration held at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, themed “Excellence, Innovation and Impact.”

Represented by the state’s Accountant General, Mrs. Njum Onyemanam, Governor Otti commended accountants, particularly those in public service, for their contributions to his administration’s development goals. He encouraged them to strengthen their commitment to transparency and ethical conduct, stressing the importance of sustaining and enhancing their impact on governance.

“The roles expected of accountants are what you are already performing, but you must continue to improve and add more value in governance,” Otti said. “You need to be increasingly accountable, uphold ethical standards, and enhance the value you contribute to the state.” He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to reforms that promote fiscal discipline, transparency, and responsible financial management, highlighting the critical role of accountants in realizing his vision for a new Abia.

Speaking at the event, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Kenneth Kalu, also an accountant, urged professionals to embrace innovation and excellence in line with this year’s theme. He noted, “Innovation matters when it improves lives and enhances service delivery. We can honor the governor by innovating in our roles and providing better results.” Similarly, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Obi Chianakwalam, encouraged accountants to go beyond routine practices, embrace new approaches, and focus on the impact of their work. The event also featured a lecture by Prof. Chris Timothy and drew participants from across the state.
