A heated confrontation between social media critic Martins Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), and comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, widely called Mr. Jollof, caused chaos aboard an Abuja-bound flight on Monday.
The disagreement, which quickly escalated into a physical fight, left passengers alarmed as cabin crew rushed to restore order. A video of the incident, now trending online, shows both men exchanging words before the quarrel turned violent.
While the exact cause of the altercation was unclear as of press time, the clash is believed to stem from an ongoing online dispute involving VDM and Mr. Jollof’s wife.
Shortly after the incident, VDM shared a video on Facebook, claiming he had confronted Mr. Jollof during the scuffle and alleging the comedian bit him mid-struggle. “I don chop Jollof father for inside the plane. He bite me, man wey de bite,” he said.
Efforts by The Guardian to reach both men for comment were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
Attempts to get a statement from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also yielded no immediate response. However, the agency’s spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, wrote on X that the NCAA is awaiting an official report from the airline involved.
He noted that aviation officers in Asaba have been directed to investigate the incident thoroughly, including the actions of aviation security, flight crew, and timelines for intervention.
Achimugu emphasised that while the NCAA cannot prosecute offenders, the agency may advise the airline to blacklist the passengers and forward the case to the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police for appropriate action.
