Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has expressed confidence that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will eventually regain his freedom through a political process.
Kalu gave the assurance on Thursday following the Federal High Court judgment in Abuja, which sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment. He maintained that despite the ruling, hope for Kanu’s release remains alive.
The Deputy Speaker disclosed that efforts are already underway to pursue a political solution, stressing that the approach, previously stalled due to the ongoing court case, can now proceed with renewed vigour.
He also expressed faith in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider appeals from respected Igbo leaders, adding that the President is not opposed to exploring political options.
Kalu urged residents of the South East and Nigerians at large to remain calm, assuring them that discussions toward securing Kanu’s release will be intensified.
According to him:
“It is now time to explore political solutions that were previously hindered because the matter was before the court. But now that the court has concluded its process, we will intensify our request for the President’s intervention. We are confident that he is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost. Our people should remain calm.”
