Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, could consider realigning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if the party “mends its ways,” NNPP officials have suggested.

NNPP Chairman, Hashim Dungurawa, disclosed this during a press briefing at the party secretariat in Kano State, highlighting that Kwankwaso, as a seasoned politician, remains open to the 2027 electoral campaigns. However, any move back to APC would hinge on the party being ready for genuine political negotiation and realignment. Dungurawa emphasized that NNPP’s leadership will remain steadfast in its principles and will not yield to undue pressure.

The statement follows recent interactions between Kwankwaso and former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, described by Dungurawa as “unprecedented acquittances.” He also noted the coincidental nature of subsequent contacts between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Ganduje.

Dungurawa acknowledged intensified lobbying by the APC to woo Kwankwaso, citing his political influence and the party’s reliance on his support to regain control in Kano.

On the matter of recent defections of NNPP lawmakers to the APC, Dungurawa expressed regret but warned that the defectors may struggle to thrive in their new political environment.
