President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has restated his conviction that Nigeria’s unity is far stronger than political disagreements, revealing that he once appealed to elder statesman Chief Olabode George not to go into exile after the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu’s remarks were delivered on Friday in Lagos by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the 80th birthday celebration and public presentation of Chief George’s memoir.
The President described the PDP chieftain and former Military Governor of old Ondo State as a “distinguished Nigerian, elder statesman, and accomplished public servant” whose decades of service reflect discipline, patriotism, and commitment to the nation.
Tinubu said his presence at the event symbolised the enduring spirit of Lagos and Nigeria, one that transcends rivalry and embraces shared history and humanity.
“This event shows once again that as politicians we may shout and disagree, but the values that bind us as members of the same household, living in different rooms, are stronger than what divides us,” he said.
Acknowledging their long-standing political differences dating back to 1999, Tinubu stressed that those disagreements have never erased the mutual respect he shares with Chief George. He added that the PDP stalwart has continued to offer constructive commentary on national issues since he became president.
Reflecting on a past remark in which Chief George vowed to go into exile if Tinubu became president, the President said: “I pleaded with him to have a change of heart, because we would all remain in Nigeria and work together for the peaceful and prosperous nation we dream of.”
Tinubu also praised Chief George’s milestone 80th birthday, describing it as a celebration of divine grace and resilience, and expressing gladness that the event was held in Lagos, his home state.
Speaking on the memoir launched at the event, Tinubu said the book provides insights into Chief George’s upbringing in Lagos, military career, governorship, leadership at the Nigerian Ports Authority, and his role in national politics. He encouraged guests to buy copies both for themselves and for public institutions.
The President concluded by wishing Chief George continued strength, good health, and many more years of service to Nigeria and humanity.
