To tackle Nigeria’s shortage of over 1.2 million teachers, the Federal Government has unveiled a nationwide programme aimed at expanding access to online learning for primary and secondary school students.
The initiative, Inspire Live(s)! Online Real-Time Classes, seeks to address the persistent teacher deficit while ensuring uninterrupted learning across the country.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the programme delivers live, interactive lessons directly to students, making quality education accessible regardless of location or circumstance.
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa confirmed that full implementation is underway, covering classes from Primary 1 to Senior Secondary 3. While Junior and Senior Secondary classes have begun, the primary school segment is yet to be rolled out.
The programme is open to all public and private schools nationwide, with daily classes streamed for JSS 1, JSS 2, and SS 2 from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.
Subjects for Junior Secondary School include: Basic Science, Mathematics, English, ICT, Agricultural Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, French, Physical Education, Religious Studies, History, and Business Studies.
Senior Secondary School subjects include: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing/Catering Craft, Civic Education, and Automobile Mechanics.
Boriowo highlighted that lessons are conducted by certified master teachers via Cisco Webex. To ensure smooth nationwide delivery, all State Commissioners of Education have been directed to:
Appoint a State Focal Officer for Inspire Live(s)! coordination
Circulate programme details to public and private school principals
Equip designated schools with basic ICT facilities and internet connectivity
Oversee registration of students through Inspire support channels
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce learning disruption caused by the shortage of teachers and increase access to quality education for millions of students across Nigeria.
