A landmark step toward administrative restructuring and enhanced grassroots development was taken on Wednesday as the House of Representatives advanced Honourable Obi Aguocha’s constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South Local Government Areas in Abia State. The bill, HB 2592, successfully passed its second reading, marking a significant victory for Ndi Ikwuano and strengthening the quest for fairer representation within the Nigerian federation.

The proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) aims to split the current Ikwuano Local Government Area into two fully recognized LGAs. Lawmakers who spoke during the debate highlighted the demographic growth, administrative pressures and infrastructural needs of the region, noting that the creation of two additional LGAs would enable more efficient governance, improve access to federal and state opportunities and accelerate socio economic development.

Honourable Aguocha, in presenting the bill, emphasized that the demand for additional LGAs is rooted in decades of community aspiration, population expansion and the need for balanced administrative attention. He noted that the creation of Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South would not only deepen democratic participation but also strengthen cultural identity and economic planning at the grassroots.

The bill’s progression to the committee stage now opens the door for comprehensive technical review, stakeholder input and further legislative refinement. If eventually passed and assented to, the amendment will place Ikwuano among the few Nigerian communities to achieve constitutionally recognized administrative expansion through parliamentary process.

Honourable Aguocha expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their overwhelming support, describing the development as “a victory for justice, equity and the future of our people.” He reaffirmed his dedication to championing issues that promote balanced development and dignified representation for Abia State.

The advancement of HB 2592 stands as a strong signal of renewed legislative momentum toward addressing long standing structural demands across the federation.
