The Nigerian House of Representatives has called for a thorough investigation following reports that military personnel allegedly shot and killed several unarmed women, including a 13-year-old girl, during a protest in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Residents say the incident occurred during a peaceful demonstration, sparking outrage across the community.
In a motion presented by a federal lawmaker, members expressed serious concern over the loss of lives, damage to property, and the potential impact on local peace. Lawmakers urged all troops deployed in the area to exercise restraint, follow rules of engagement, and maintain professionalism to avoid further escalation.
The House Speaker has directed the Committees on Human Rights, Defence, and Internal Security to carry out a fact-finding mission to Lamurde and submit a report within two weeks. Another committee has been assigned to monitor compliance with the resolution.
During proceedings, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the victims and emphasized the importance of accountability, justice, and restoring public trust in security forces.
