The Federal Government of Nigeria has sent a diplomatic delegation to Burkina Faso to formally apologise over a reported violation of the country’s airspace, a move aimed at easing tensions and preserving regional cooperation. The visit follows concerns raised by Burkinabè authorities over the alleged incursion, which Abuja described as unintentional.

According to officials, the delegation is mandated to convey Nigeria’s regret and reaffirm its respect for Burkina Faso’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Nigerian authorities explained that preliminary findings indicate the incident may have resulted from operational or technical lapses rather than any hostile intent.

The diplomatic mission is also expected to engage Burkina Faso’s leadership on strengthening communication and coordination mechanisms to prevent a recurrence. Discussions are likely to focus on aviation protocols, intelligence sharing, and broader security collaboration within the West African sub-region.

Nigeria reiterated its commitment to peaceful relations with neighbouring countries and to existing regional agreements governing airspace management. Observers say the swift diplomatic response underscores Abuja’s desire to maintain stability and solidarity among West African states amid ongoing security and political challenges in the region.
