The Federal Government has announced that Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025 will be observed as Christmas and Boxing Day holidays, with Thursday, January 1, 2026 marking the New Year public holiday. The declaration came in a statement from the Ministry of Interior, emphasizing the government’s intent to give Nigerians a chance to celebrate the festive season with family and friends.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo urged citizens to reflect on the values of love, peace, and unity during the holidays, and to pray for the nation’s security and prosperity. He also called on all Nigerians, regardless of faith or background, to remain law‑abiding and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful celebration.
The government’s announcement is expected to affect banks, schools, and most public offices, which will be closed for the specified days. Private sector employers have been encouraged to follow suit and grant their staff the holidays, fostering a nationwide spirit of rest and rejoicing.
As the country prepares for the festivities, officials wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a joyful Boxing Day, and a happy and prosperous New Year.
