President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commiserated with Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a fatal auto accident in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two of his associates and left him injured.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu disclosed that he spoke with Joshua by phone to personally extend his condolences and pray for his recovery. He added that Joshua assured him he was receiving quality medical care at the hospital. The President also spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort, and she expressed appreciation for the gesture.
Tinubu noted that he had also discussed the situation with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who assured him that all necessary medical support would be provided.
Earlier, in a message posted on X, President Tinubu expressed deep sympathy to Joshua and his family, praising the boxer’s courage, discipline, and patriotism, which he said have made him a symbol of national pride. He prayed for strength for Joshua and for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed that Joshua and another injured passenger were immediately airlifted to a specialist medical facility in Lagos, where doctors have declared them stable and not in need of emergency surgical intervention.
Sanwo-Olu said a full medical team has been assigned to monitor their condition, adding that Joshua remains conscious and in contact with his family. He further disclosed that Lagos and Ogun State governments are jointly monitoring the situation while investigations into the cause of the crash have commenced to prevent future occurrences.
The governor thanked Nigerians for their concern and prayers, while appealing for privacy for Joshua and his family during this difficult period.
