Newly released data on welfare assistance among immigrant households in the United States indicates that about 33.3 per cent of Nigerians living in the country benefit from some form of welfare programme.

The statistics were shared on X by @America, an account linked to America PAC, a political action committee founded by Elon Musk, which supports candidates advocating for border security and free speech policies.

According to the publication, Nigerians fall within the lower segment of immigrant groups receiving welfare support when compared with several others. The highest beneficiary percentages were recorded among immigrants from Bhutan (81.4%), Yemen (75.2%) and Somalia (71.9%).

The figures also highlighted welfare recipient rates across different regions and countries, covering Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and island nations. Several countries recorded rates above 50 per cent, while many others—including Nigeria—were below that threshold.

While the post did not state the methodology or official source of the statistics, it has generated conversations around immigrant support systems, economic integration and welfare dependence among migrant communities in the U.S.

Further clarification from U.S. authorities or independent research bodies is expected as discussions continue.
