Presidency Denies Claims Tinubu–Kagame Paris Photo Was AI-Generated

The Presidency has dismissed reports suggesting that a photograph of President Bola Tinubu and Rwandan President Paul Kagame taken in Paris was created using artificial intelligence, describing the claims as false and misleading.

The clarification followed widespread speculation after the image, taken during President Tinubu’s private meeting with President Kagame on January 4, 2026, surfaced online. Debate intensified when an enhanced version of the photo carried a visible “Grok” watermark, sparking allegations that the image was fabricated.

Despite earlier explanations, skepticism persisted on social media, with many Nigerians demanding greater transparency in the use of digital tools in official communications.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Presidency reaffirmed that the photograph was genuine and captured during an actual diplomatic engagement in Paris. It explained that the image was originally taken with a mobile device and later enhanced using digital tools to improve clarity, an action it stressed does not equate to AI fabrication.

The Presidency noted that both leaders shared a private lunch before later joining French President Emmanuel Macron for dinner, underscoring ongoing diplomatic cooperation.

Calling for responsible journalism, the Presidency expressed concern over rushed conclusions and urged media professionals to verify information before publishing claims that may mislead the public.

The statement, signed by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accurate communication.
