Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has approved a major clean-up and structural enforcement exercise at the Onitsha Main Market, targeting shops and extensions identified as illegally constructed within the trading hub.
Officials said the move is part of a broader urban renewal and safety campaign aimed at restoring order, improving access routes, and reducing risks linked to overcrowded and poorly planned structures. Market inspectors have already begun marking affected buildings, with owners directed to comply before the February 14, 2026 deadline.
The planned demolition has stirred anxiety among traders, many of whom say their shops represent years of investment and are their only source of livelihood. Several shop owners appealed to the state government for more time, clearer guidelines, and possible alternatives before enforcement begins.
Market leaders confirmed they are in talks with government representatives to better understand the scope of the exercise and to seek relief measures, while authorities insist the operation will proceed as scheduled to ensure safety and proper market layout.
