A potentially deadly incident was avoided in Aba, Abia State, after military personnel were called to remove a suspected explosive device discovered at the United Evangelical Church (UEC) in Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill.
According to eyewitnesses, church members were digging to replace an old fence when they unearthed a large metal object buried in the ground. One worker reportedly attempted to move the object, but the priest immediately intervened, suspecting it could be dangerous. The military was quickly notified and dispatched soldiers to secure the area and remove the object safely.
The discovery coincided with ongoing road expansion work by the state government near the church. Residents noted that the intervention likely prevented serious injuries or damage, as the area is usually crowded with traders and passersby.
The military later confirmed that the object was an empty casing of a 36 Energa grenade, believed to date back to the Nigerian Civil War. While the casing posed no immediate threat, it was recovered for documentation and investigation.
Officials said the Army Headquarters is now overseeing further investigation to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Residents and church members expressed relief and gratitude for the prompt response that averted what could have been a tragic situation.
