Top Lawyer Urges Calm After Misleading Reports on Ngwo Community Court Ruling

Senior Advocate of Nigeria Anthony Ani has warned the public about misinformation circulating online and in some newspapers regarding a court judgment involving the Ngwo area and the now-voided Ukwuna Autonomous Community in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Ani explained that the legal case focused on procedural issues surrounding Ukwuna’s creation, not on whether Ngwo exists as a community. He said reports suggesting the court declared Ngwo not a community were misleading and could stir unnecessary tensions among local residents.

According to the senior lawyer, Justice Cyprian Ogbu Ajah’s ruling simply stated that Ukwuna’s creation did not follow required legal steps and that there’s no formally recognised autonomous community called “Enugu Ngwo” in the council area — but this doesn’t mean Ngwo people or settlements don’t exist.

Ani urged individuals and media outlets to be careful with how they report legal decisions so that misunderstandings do not affect peace and unity in Enugu North LGA.
