Lagos Hospitals Grind to a Halt Amid Prolonged Health Worker Strike

Public hospitals and clinics in Lagos remain largely closed after health workers extended their strike, leaving many patients without care and forcing some to seek treatment in private facilities or delay necessary medical attention. The disruption has caused widespread frustration among residents.

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), representing non-doctor health professionals, say the strike continues because state authorities have not agreed to clear solutions on issues such as fair pay, professional recognition, and improved working conditions. Union leaders also accuse the Lagos State government of delaying progress and failing to fulfill previous promises.

Health workers are calling for long-standing reforms, including better compensation and greater autonomy for certain professional groups, which they argue are crucial for fairness within the healthcare system.

As the strike drags on, ordinary Lagos residents are feeling the impact, with many forced to rely on expensive private care or go without medical services altogether.
