The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has raised concerns about the increasing influence of politicians over the judiciary, warning that some judges and magistrates may be compromising their independence.
Speaking recently, Osigwe highlighted patterns where judicial decisions seem to favor powerful individuals or political interests, rather than being guided solely by the law. He said this trend risks eroding public trust in the legal system.
He also noted that certain laws, such as those governing online activity, are sometimes applied in ways that target critics or dissenting voices. According to Osigwe, when judicial officers allow such practices, the courts appear to serve political agendas rather than constitutional justice.
The NBA President called for urgent reforms to protect judicial independence, including transparent appointments, strict accountability measures, and safeguards to ensure that courts remain neutral and fair.
