Group Calls for Fully Digital Voting Results to Strengthen Election Credibility

A coalition of civic organisations has urged Nigeria’s lawmakers to make real-time electronic transmission of election results a compulsory part of the nation’s voting process. They say this step is crucial for ensuring transparency and preventing manipulation during elections.

The group expressed concern that current legislative drafts still allow results to be transmitted manually under certain circumstances, which they argue could be exploited to undermine election integrity. They stressed that relying on technology alone is not enough unless it is backed by law.

Citing Nigeria’s improved internet infrastructure and the successful use of tools like the BVAS and INEC’s Result Viewing Portal in past elections, the coalition argued that a legally binding digital system would enhance voter confidence and reduce delays in announcing results.

The organisations called on lawmakers to prioritise these reforms, emphasizing that enforcing fully digital transmission is key to credible, efficient, and trustworthy elections in the coming years.
