Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,Hon Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the All Progressives Congress to a consensus-driven approach ahead of its ward and local government congresses nationwide.
Addressing party stakeholders in Umuahia, Kalu explained that the adoption of a harmonised structure was endorsed by the party’s leadership, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to maintain cohesion and avoid internal disputes.
He stressed that the method is designed to ensure fair representation and inclusivity, rather than weaken democratic values. According to him, the approach helps balance competing interests while strengthening unity within party ranks at all levels.
Hon Kalu maintained that the party’s integrity must take precedence over individual ambitions, warning against actions capable of creating divisions or parallel structures.
He further revealed that decisions reached by the party’s top organs remain binding, noting that swift interventions have been carried out by the leadership whenever disagreements emerged in some states.
Speaking on developments in Abia, the Deputy Speaker said he had to step in personally to stabilise the situation and guide the implementation of the agreed framework, ensuring broader participation at the grassroots.
The party has fixed its ward congresses for February 25, with local government congresses scheduled for the following day. Committees have been set up to oversee the process, while officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission are expected to observe proceedings.
Officials involved in coordinating the exercise in Abia have expressed confidence that the process will be orderly and widely accepted, urging members to cooperate for the overall success of the party and its future electoral prospects.
