Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has ordered all public office holders with political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections to resign from their positions.
In a statement released by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Umar Ikhilor Esq., dated 28 February 2026, public officers were given a deadline of 1 March 2026 to step down. The directive aims to ensure fairness, transparency, and a level playing field for all aspirants, while safeguarding the neutrality and integrity of public institutions.
The statement reads:
“Public office holders are reminded that the responsibilities of governance must not be compromised by partisan political engagements. All affected officers are therefore advised to take immediate and necessary steps to comply with this directive within the stipulated timeline.”
Following the directive, two appointees have already resigned to pursue their political ambitions. They are Hon. Pius Alile, Deputy Chief of Staff at Government House, and Terry Igiebor, a member of the Edo State Audit Service.
In his resignation letter dated 27 February 2026, Alile stated:
“I, Hon. Pius Alile, hereby formally tender my resignation as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Edo State Government, effective from 27 February 2026. This decision is made in compliance with the provisions of the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which requires holders of executive positions, including political appointees and public office holders, to resign their appointments before contesting in elections. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the government and the people of Edo State.”
Similarly, Igiebor, in a letter dated 1 March 2026, said:
“This decision is in compliance with the recent circular issued by the Edo State Government directing all intending government appointees who wish to contest elections to resign on or before 1 March 2026. In obedience to this directive and in respect for due process and constituted authority, I hereby relinquish my appointment.”
