The Federal Government has launched a new effort to ban the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic drinks in sachets and very small bottles. The move aims to reduce easy access to alcohol, particularly among young people, and discourage harmful consumption patterns.
Officials said the enforcement follows consultations, extensions of previous deadlines, and recent data showing high levels of alcohol access among minors. The prohibition applies to alcoholic products packaged in sachets and containers smaller than 200 millilitres.
Authorities explained that smaller packaging makes it easier for underage and vulnerable individuals to buy and conceal alcoholic drinks, contributing to early and risky drinking habits. The government says the policy aligns with global public‑health goals.
The crackdown has drawn mixed reactions: while public‑health advocates support the move, labour unions and industry groups have protested, citing economic impacts and calling for a policy review.
