Warri Journalists Challenge Delta NUJ Leadership, Demand Chairman’s Exit

A fresh dispute has erupted within the Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) after members of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel declared a loss of confidence in the state council chairman, Churchill Oyowe. The resolution followed an emergency meeting in Warri where journalists deliberated on concerns surrounding the upcoming chapel election.

At the gathering, several members accused the chairman of actions they believe undermine the union’s democratic principles. The journalists alleged that certain eligible members were removed from the voters’ register ahead of the election scheduled for March 16, a move they said could prevent qualified participants from exercising their voting rights.

Participants at the meeting also criticized what they described as unilateral decisions affecting the administration of the state council. According to them, key choices impacting the chapel and its members were taken without sufficient consultation with the council’s leadership structure, raising concerns about transparency and adherence to the union’s constitution.

Following deliberations, the chapel unanimously adopted a motion urging the chairman to step aside from his position or face possible disciplinary procedures within the union. The journalists also appealed to the NUJ national leadership to intervene and ensure that the forthcoming election is conducted fairly and that any members previously excluded are reinstated to participate fully.
