The Federal Ministry of Works has addressed recent claims from the Abia State Government regarding control over the Umuahia‑Ikwuano‑Ikot Ekpene federal highway, emphasizing that both federal and state authorities are actively involved.
The Federal Controller of Works in Abia State, Chidi Uwaeziozi, explained that contractors hired by the federal government continue work on part of the highway, while the Abia State Government manages rehabilitation on another section.
According to Mr. Uwaeziozi, the road reconstruction was divided into phases. The federal contractor is completing the remaining part of Phase One, while the state’s contractor focuses on Phase Two.
He clarified that Abia State did not take over the entire project but is responsible for rehabilitating about 25 km of the road within its territory. Meanwhile, the federal team continues work on the stretch between Isiala Oboro and Ogbuebulle communities in Ikwuano Local Government Area.
The highway has experienced delays in recent years due to funding gaps and compensation issues affecting progress. Officials believe this joint approach will speed up completion and enhance connectivity in the South‑East.
