The Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Dr. Samuel Kanu-Uche, has emphasised that Nigeria’s progress depends more on good governance and genuine patriotism than on the age or regional background of political leaders.
Speaking on national issues, including governance, insecurity, and preparations for the 2027 general elections, Kanu-Uche said Nigeria needs selfless leaders committed to unity, peace, and development.
On the role of the church in politics, he dismissed claims that it should remain detached, noting that religion has historically shaped leadership and societal values. According to him, the church, made up of citizens, cannot be separated from governance and should remain actively concerned about how the country is run.
Addressing Nigeria’s persistent challenges, he said no nation is without difficulties, but stressed that leaders must uphold justice, equity, and the rule of law. He added that righteous leadership is key to national growth and stability.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Kanu-Uche urged citizens, especially Christians, to actively participate in the political process, not as an institution, but as individuals. He encouraged involvement in party activities, primaries, and leadership selection to ensure credible candidates emerge.
On insecurity, he alleged that much of the violence in the country is politically motivated, with some influential figures sponsoring unrest for personal or political gain. He warned that such actions ultimately harm the nation and those behind them.
He called for a change of heart among political leaders, religious figures, and citizens, stressing the need for genuine patriotism and collective responsibility to address insecurity and restore peace.
Speaking on leadership demographics, Kanu-Uche maintained that competence and commitment should take precedence over age. While acknowledging the experience of older politicians and the energy of younger ones, he said Nigeria’s priority should be leaders who genuinely care about the country’s future.
Commenting on global conflicts, he described war as destructive and economically harmful, urging nations involved in tensions to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution rather than military confrontation.
On the Tinubu administration, now in its third year, Kanu-Uche said Nigerians expect practical improvements in their daily lives, including access to food, education, and basic services. He urged leaders at all levels to focus on policies that directly benefit citizens and ease their hardships.
He also encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and supportive of their country, while engaging constructively rather than resorting only to criticism.
Kanu-Uche concluded that with responsible leadership and a shared commitment to national development, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and achieve lasting peace and prosperity.
