Peter Obi, the Former Anambra State Governor has publicly criticised the reported detention of respected Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, saying the move raises serious concerns for Nigeria’s democratic future.

Obi stated that the cleric was taken into custody shortly after hosting him in Kaduna over the weekend. He argued that arresting a religious leader under such circumstances undermines the democratic freedoms that citizens are entitled to.

Describing the situation as part of a worrying trend, Obi urged authorities to respect fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and movement. He warned that actions perceived as political intimidation could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions.

Obi also called on the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that citizens — including dissenting voices — are treated fairly in line with democratic standards.
