ASUU Rejects Plan for UK University Campus in Nigeria

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Federal Government’s proposal to establish a branch of a UK university in Nigeria, warning that it could weaken the country’s higher education system.

Speaking at a public lecture, the union’s president, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said the agreement with Coventry University is unacceptable and should be halted. He argued that foreign institutions expanding into Nigeria, while local students face challenges studying abroad, sends the wrong message.

Piwuna urged the government to prioritize strengthening Nigerian universities and warned that ASUU would resist the plan if it goes ahead. The union also reminded authorities of pending agreements on better pay for lecturers and issued a short deadline for their implementation.
