The leading Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in a bid to foster peace and national unity.

In a statement, the group urged the president to use his constitutional powers of mercy to grant Kanu unconditional freedom ahead of the upcoming Democracy Day celebrations, saying such a move could help heal divisions in the country.

Ohanaeze officials emphasized the importance of reconciliation and called on the federal government to act with compassion, noting that similar acts of clemency in the past have contributed to national cohesion.

The appeal comes amid ongoing debates over Kanu’s imprisonment and broader discussions on justice, security, and political dialogue in Nigeria.
