Outrage Trails Tinubu’s Brief Airport Visit to Plateau

Public criticism has followed President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Plateau State, with many questioning its short duration, limited scope, and the decision to confine activities to the airport.

During his remarks, Tinubu noted he had only 10 minutes in Jos due to limited airport electricity, which restricted his stay.

The visit came after deadly attacks in the state, including the killing of about 28 people at a community bar in Jos on March 29, and another assault in Kimakpa village, Bassa Local Council, where more than 50 people were reportedly killed.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the handling of the visit, describing it as insensitive. In a statement issued by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku criticised the President for failing to visit affected communities, bereaved families, or injured victims in hospitals.

He further alleged that the President’s engagement was limited to a meeting at the airport with political allies and traditional rulers, distancing him from those directly impacted. Atiku also faulted the relocation of grieving residents to Heipang near Barkin Ladi to meet the President, calling it inappropriate during a period of mourning.

According to him, the visit appeared more symbolic than empathetic, prioritising optics over genuine concern. He stressed that Nigerians expect meaningful leadership that ensures safety and prevents future attacks, rather than brief appearances.

Meanwhile, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Chris Smith, condemned the killings and urged the Nigerian government to take urgent steps to protect Christian communities. He described the attacks as part of a troubling pattern, particularly as they occurred during Palm Sunday, a significant Christian observance.

Smith called for increased security deployment, accountability for perpetrators, and protection of citizens regardless of religion, warning that repeated violence during religious periods threatens national unity.

In response, President Tinubu pledged decisive action to end the violence in Plateau State. He announced plans to install over 5,000 surveillance cameras across Jos to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen security response.

The President also directed security agencies to intensify operations and ensure those responsible for the attacks are apprehended and prosecuted. He assured victims that while no compensation could replace lost lives, the government would take concrete steps to prevent recurrence and provide support.

Additionally, Tinubu instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to assess the impact of the attacks and coordinate relief efforts for affected families. He also called for the expansion of the state’s peace and security committee to include more stakeholders.

To reinforce security efforts, the Nigerian Army deployed 850 additional troops from Abuja and Kaduna to Plateau State under Operation Enduring Peace. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said the move aims to restore order and protect lives and property.

The army leadership also conducted an on-the-spot assessment in Jos, engaging with community leaders and urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operations.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria alleged that foreign elements may be behind the recent violence, warning of attempts to incite wider religious conflict. The group called for stronger intelligence efforts and decisive government action to address the situation.

It urged Nigerians to remain united and law-abiding, while encouraging religious leaders to promote peace and tolerance amid rising tensions.
