Nigerian Resident Doctors Halt Hospital Services Over Backlog of Payments

Resident doctors across Nigeria have commenced a nationwide strike starting Tuesday, April 7, 2026, protesting unresolved pay and allowance issues. The action, organised by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), is expected to disrupt services in federal and state-run hospitals.

The dispute arises from the federal government’s reported suspension of an updated Professional Allowance Table, previously agreed upon with the association. NARD leadership described the move as a breach of earlier commitments and a threat to doctors’ compensation.

Union officials announced the strike after a meeting, describing it as a “total and comprehensive” work stoppage. Their key demands include reversing the halt on the allowance structure, payment of outstanding salary and promotion arrears, and settlement of nearly 19 months of unpaid entitlements. They also seek timely release of funds for medical residency training.

Healthcare stakeholders have raised concerns that the strike could place additional pressure on the already fragile public health system, particularly if essential services remain suspended for a prolonged period.
