The Kebbi State Government has confirmed the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Ankwai, popularly known as Muhammad Usman Zuru.

According to reports, Ankwai passed away on Monday evening, April 6, 2026, at a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. He was 56 years old.

In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Governor Nasir Idris described the loss as both tragic and significant for the state and the country. He praised the late Speaker as a dependable ally and a steadying presence in the legislature, noting that his dedication to service and unity made a lasting impact in Kebbi State.

Governor Idris said Ankwai’s death has left a major leadership gap, extending his sympathies to the deceased’s family, the Zuru Emirate, and members of the State House of Assembly. He also prayed for the repose of his soul and strength for those grieving.

Ankwai, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represented the Zuru Constituency and was elected Speaker of the 10th Assembly on June 8, 2023.

Details of his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced after his remains are returned to Nigeria from Egypt.
