The South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) has claimed that Nigeria was on the brink of an irreversible crisis before President Bola Tinubu assumed office in 2023, stating that his decisive policies prevented the country from sliding into economic collapse.
The group said Tinubu’s bold reforms helped the nation avoid hyperinflation and bankruptcy, adding that his leadership has stabilised the economy and improved governance across sectors.
SWAGA, which played a key role in mobilising support for Tinubu’s election, made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, where it also declared support for the President’s second-term bid.
Now rebranded as SWAGA 2.0, the group cited achievements in infrastructure, education, housing, and military welfare as reasons for its continued backing of the administration.
Speaking during the visit, SWAGA National Chairman, Senator Dayo Adeyeye, said the group’s early support for Tinubu had been justified. He noted that Nigeria was “living on borrowed time” before the current administration, stressing that major candidates in the 2023 election were aware of the need to remove fuel subsidy.
Adeyeye explained that even former President Muhammadu Buhari had acknowledged the unsustainability of subsidy payments, adding that businesses, including the Dangote refinery, would have struggled under strict regulations without ongoing reforms.
He praised Tinubu for taking tough decisions that, according to him, have enabled all tiers of government to function more effectively.
Adeyeye also highlighted initiatives such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), saying it has improved access to funding for students and is already impacting citizens at the grassroots.
Also speaking, SWAGA Convener and Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Oyetunde Ojo, said the group is ready to defend Tinubu’s record against critics. He revealed that several housing projects, including schemes for military personnel, are expected to be commissioned in the coming months.
Ojo further pointed to recent political defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an indication of growing support for the President’s leadership.
In his remarks, the Deji of Akure recalled his early endorsement of Tinubu and cited the recent approval of a federal teaching hospital in Akure as a key achievement. He noted that the city had long lacked such a facility despite its size and population.
The monarch also commended the appointment of an indigene of Akure as a substantive minister, describing it as a significant development for the community.
