Tension rose in Abuja on Wednesday as leading opposition figures rallied hundreds of supporters in a protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The demonstration, tagged #OccupyINEC, took place at the Maitama Roundabout and was led by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who are challenging recent decisions by the electoral body.
Prominent political figures at the protest included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Others present were former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and ex-Senator Dino Melaye.
The protest highlighted growing concerns among opposition leaders, who accused INEC of undermining multi-party democracy. They expressed dissatisfaction over the commission’s refusal to recognise communications from a faction of the ADC leadership following an internal party dispute.
Speaking during the rally, Peter Obi said the protest was necessary to resist actions that could push Nigeria toward a one-party system.
Demonstrators also displayed placards backing Senator David Mark’s faction within the party’s National Working Committee, signalling divisions within the ADC. In a symbolic gesture, protesters sang Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.”
Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, criticised INEC’s role, accusing the commission of interfering in internal party matters.
With supporters, including members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, joining the rally, organisers said they would continue peaceful protests and pursue legal options until their concerns are addressed.
