Obi Calls for Nationwide Agricultural Overhaul, Says Sector Can Outperform Oil Revenue

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called for a comprehensive transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural sector, insisting that the country can generate more wealth from farming than it currently earns from crude oil.

Speaking at a public forum, Obi stressed that the potential of agriculture extends beyond any single region, noting that every part of Nigeria has the capacity to contribute significantly to food production and export earnings if properly developed.

He argued that Nigeria’s continued dependence on oil revenues has slowed economic diversification, leaving vast agricultural resources underutilized. According to him, investing in modern farming techniques, storage facilities, and value chains would unlock opportunities across the country and strengthen the economy.

Obi also highlighted the need for improved security, infrastructure, and access to credit for farmers nationwide, stating that these factors are critical to boosting productivity and attracting young people into agriculture.

Emphasizing long-term planning, he urged government authorities to adopt policies that support agribusiness and encourage local production, adding that a thriving agricultural sector would not only reduce unemployment but also enhance Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

He maintained that with coordinated efforts and commitment, Nigeria can reposition itself as a leading agricultural powerhouse while reducing its reliance on oil as the primary source of revenue.
