Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has commissioned a ₦3 billion quarry plant in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, and procured 70 new trucks to boost road construction and maintenance across the state.
The quarry facility, with a production capacity of 120 tonnes per hour, is designed to supply locally sourced materials such as granite and gravel. The initiative is expected to reduce dependence on external suppliers and lower the cost of infrastructure projects.
Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Governor Zulum said the move to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Works and the Borno State Road Maintenance Agency (BORMA) was driven by ongoing security challenges in parts of the state.
He explained that many contractors are reluctant to operate in high-risk areas due to insurgency threats, making it necessary for the government to take a more direct role in executing projects.
“No serious contractor is willing to deploy equipment to some of these locations because of the security situation. We have to empower our agencies to handle these projects,” Zulum said.
The 70 trucks are expected to enhance the transportation of construction materials to project sites, particularly in rural communities, and improve the speed of road repairs.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, as well as senior engineers and other stakeholders responsible for managing the new facility and equipment.
